More Than a Coffeehouse.
The Door, located in the heart of Laporte, Minnesota, is a beautiful home from 1906 restored with a dual purpose: serving as both a coffee house and an emergency shelter for the homeless.
"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me."

About
The Door, which was established by Joyce and Kevin Day, is located in a historic building that dates back 120 years and has served as both a family home and a parsonage. The Days committed themselves to this endeavor with a strong sense of purpose, even giving up their own way of life to see it through.
The Door, a non-profit concept that combines a coffee shop called "Level Ground" with an upstairs emergency shelter, was first intended as a community gathering spot. For both individuals and families, the shelter offers short-term lodging, opening the door to a new chapter in their lives. The Door has continuously run at full capacity since its debut in 2020.
The renovation of the house was a collaborative effort, involving family members, friends, neighbors, and local businesses who generously donated their labor, materials, and financial support. The coffee shop serves as a source of ongoing funding for the shelter, with Heroes Rise Coffee exclusively served and a portion of the proceeds benefiting local fire and police departments.
The Days and their dedicated team offer various services to their guests, including computer assistance, transportation to appointments, and support in connecting with relevant agencies. They aim to address the housing shortage by planning to build additional transient housing on their property in the future. The Day's ultimate measure of success is witnessing the transformation of individuals who come through their doors, helping them break free from the cycle of poverty.
